Pittsburgh Steeler Hall of Fame Quarterback & NFL all time Great scrambling to throw one of his rocket passes to a teammate in Inclement Weather - the Legend, Terry Bradshaw
I’ll try to on a monthly basis add a Pittsburgh Steeler player from the past that I can recall as a true man of Steel, not necessarily a Hall of Famer nor Pro Bowler just players that I can recall fondly.
1st one is my fav Steeler, Terry Bradshaw – the man himself. I am lucky enough to have received one of his autographed books about 15 years ago thru a co-worker pal of mine (he was a guest speaker) – one of my prized possessions. He played in 4 Super Bowls, won them all – enough said there. A short recap of his 14 year Hall of Fame career 1970 - 1983 (played only 1 game his last year).
Played 168 regular season games, the equivalent of 10.5 full seasons now, keep in mind till mid seventies, the NFL was a 14 game schedule not 16 like now. He completed near 52% of his passes for almost 28,000 yards & 212 TDs. His best year rating wise was his last year, as he played 1 game completed 5 of 8 passes for 77 yards & 2 tds – rating of 133.9 – awesome farewell. His best year though was 1975 with an 88 rating, 18 tds 2,055 yards in 14 games. Those numbers seem so small, keep in mind of 3 things – back then it was only 14 games, rushing for most teams was primary offense - & for the Steelers it’s still a biggest part of offense, & back then you could crush/mangle & assault the Wide Receivers anywhere anytime – receptions & reception yards back then were low. 100 catch seasons, forget about it. He had his ups & downs, 1st few years the Steelers were a miserable bunch, lost a lot & he wasn’t that great. But oh boy the team started to get it together as many of the young players brought their A game – and boom – 4 titles in 6 years, 2 back to back champion campaigns. Talk about a dynasty, this is the best ever - & with free agency the way it is – I sincerely doubt there will be another dynasty such as the Steel Curtain teams of the 70’s. He was the number 1 overall pick in the 1970 draft. He was the building block on the offensive side & the 4th overall pick in the 1969 Mean Joe Greene was the building block for the Defense. Talk about solid foundations to build on, 2 stud Hall of Famers picked in the 1st round in back to back years.
