Louis Lipps, one of my fav Steelers while growing up. He played for the team when they had lousy seasons & not great QB play. This was the 80’s where the Steelers had some bad bad QBs & with him being a WR – that meant not too many chances to shine. But still he did.

Louis played 9 years in the NFL, the 1st 8 with the Pittsburgh Steelers who drafted in the 1st round pick #23 in 1984 from University of Southern Mississippi, the last year with the New Orleans Saints (2 games played). He was lucky enough to have as a teammate Super John Stallworth who helped Louis out as a rookie in 1984. He took the league by storm his rookie year, breaking the NFL record for punt return yardage by a rookie with 656 yards. Rookie numbers were 1 punt return TD, 45 pass receptions for 860 yards with 9 receiving TD’s. He went on to win the NFL Offensive Rookie of the year award & was named to the AFC Pro Bowl that same year (as a rookie), crazy. Lipps 2nd year would be even better, gaining 1,134 yards on 59 receptions & 12 TDs – earning another trip to the Pro Bowl. Steelers team MVP in 1985. In between injuries got the best of him, but still he had great years with the Steelers – of this 8 Steeler seasons he played at least 13 in 7 of them – in which he averaged 49.7 catches per year. Twice he was named Steeler MVP. He had 5 50 catch seasons with the Steelers, truly a great but forgotten one – mostly because the Steelers didn’t win much in those years.
Louis totals were 359 catches & 6,031 yards with 39 TDS – practically all with the Steelers. He played only 2 games, 1 catch for 1 yard & no TD’s with the Saints.
He can currently be heard as a co-host of a weekly Steelers-themed radio show for ESPN radio.
